Citizenship Day comes to Willmar

Amalia Anderson, Main Street Project's program director, was among the many volunteers helping dozens of people with citizenship applications and paperwork as part of Willmar, Minnesota's first ever Citizenship Day on April 19.

Several local and regional groups and businesses joined together to sponsor the services and were gratified that so many took advantage of the opportunity to get legal help with their applications. "It's really exciting," said Anderson. "People are already talking about being able to vote in future elections."

Event partners and sponsors included UMOS, West Central Integration Collaborative, Paz y Esperanza, Heritage Bank, St. Mary’s Church, Meridian Disk Services, El Tapatios and volunteers María Díaz, Jeanette Morales, Luz Gonzalez, Yolanda Ibarra, Susana Martinez, Pastor Naomi Mahler, Sister Mary Kay, Patricia Moreno and children DreAnna and Samantha, and Ed and Christian.

Citizenship Day was sponsored nationally by the American Immigration Lawyer Association.
